Enkhuizen is a 800-900 year old city granted its city-rights in 1355. In 16th and 17th century the city prospered, mainly due to the herring fishing and trading by the East and West-India Company. Of wich peroiod many structures remain.

To protect the city against the often violent sea and enemy invasion two walls were built in the 16th and 17th century. Called "Sea wall" and "Vesting wall".

The north-western part is rich in canals and bridges. The harbour offers an view of arriving and departing vessels. In summer Enkhuizen is the largest Dutch port for traditional sailing ships.
